Albania’s apparel imports increased by nearly 20% during January–July 2026, while exports remained largely unchanged. The trend highlights stronger domestic demand for imported clothing and uneven demand from major European markets.
Higher wages and favourable exchange rates may have made imported apparel more affordable for Albanian consumers. However, the country’s export performance continues to face challenges as demand from key international markets remains mixed.
China emerged as a major contributor to Albania’s import growth. Apparel shipments from China increased significantly, strengthening its position as a key sourcing destination for the Albanian market. China also accounted for a substantial share of the overall increase in apparel imports.
In contrast, Germany recorded a sharp decline in purchases of Albanian apparel. This points to continued pressure on exporters who depend on major European markets.
The gap between import growth and export performance has also affected Albania’s apparel trade surplus, which narrowed during the first seven months of the year.
The latest trend highlights changing sourcing patterns and the importance of international demand for apparel manufacturers. For Albania, sustaining export growth will depend on stronger demand, competitive pricing and continued access to key European markets.
