The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised Rahul Gandhi over his remarks following a meeting between INDIA bloc leaders and President Droupadi Murmu. The Opposition delegation met the President in New Delhi on October 9, 2026, to raise concerns about alleged irregularities in the electoral process and claims of “vote chori”.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Congress leader of presenting a politically motivated account of the meeting. He said the President’s office is an important constitutional institution and argued that Rahul Gandhi’s statement did not accurately reflect the discussion.

After the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said he was surprised that the President had neither denied nor questioned the Opposition’s allegations of vote theft. He added that the President had asked the delegation to provide evidence, which the Opposition was prepared to submit.

The BJP also questioned the Congress’s claims about electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Trivedi asked whether the party had identified discrepancies in voter lists or the counting process. He also referred to the legal time limit available to challenge election results.

The INDIA bloc has been protesting against the SIR exercise and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over its allegations. The BJP, meanwhile, has challenged the Opposition’s claims and questioned the evidence supporting them.

The exchange highlights growing political tensions over electoral transparency, voter registration and the functioning of election authorities. Both sides continue to differ over the allegations, making electoral reforms and public confidence in the voting process key issues in the political debate.
