Global Sustainability Trends in Energy and Industry in 2026

Global sustainability efforts are gaining momentum as companies and governments invest in clean energy, resource efficiency and climate resilience. Recent developments across Europe, the UK, China and Africa highlight growing efforts to reduce emissions, strengthen energy security and promote sustainable business practices.

European companies are increasingly linking sustainability with business resilience. According to new research from ISG, organisations are integrating digital technologies into sustainability strategies to improve operational performance and respond to changing business conditions.

Meanwhile, energy companies are expanding renewable fuel production. ENGIE and CMA CGM plan to develop a biomethane production facility in Le Havre, France. The plant is expected to produce around 7,000 tonnes of biomethane annually from 2029, supporting efforts to reduce emissions from maritime transport.

Investment in clean energy infrastructure is also growing. Hy24 has agreed to acquire Hynamics, EDF’s low-carbon hydrogen subsidiary, subject to regulatory and other approvals. In addition, European battery-storage operators are preparing for a winter of potentially volatile electricity prices, highlighting the growing role of energy storage in power markets.

In Africa, Climate Bonds Initiative has certified a $60 million green bond from Valency International. The funding will support a circular cashew-waste project in Côte d’Ivoire. The facility is expected to process around 90,000 tonnes of cashew-shell waste annually to produce bio-based chemicals, biofuels, biochar, fertiliser and renewable electricity.

Wind energy and water management are also receiving attention. SANY Renewable Energy has announced an extended 25-year lifecycle programme for its wind turbines. Separately, the European Commission has launched a water resilience investment accelerator to support 20 pilot projects focused on water retention, clean water and water efficiency.

Agriculture remains another important part of the sustainability agenda. The UK government aims to increase the share of farmland managed organically in England to 10% by 2036. However, the European Union has delayed certain methane-related requirements for imported oil and gas by one year, reflecting ongoing challenges around energy costs and supply security.

Corporate emissions reductions offer further evidence of progress. Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) reported a 95% reduction in direct operational and purchased-energy greenhouse gas emissions compared with its 2005 baseline. The company also reported that more than 91% of its utility waste was recycled in 2025.

Overall, these developments demonstrate how sustainability is influencing investment, industrial operations and public policy. As businesses pursue lower emissions and more efficient resource use, renewable energy, circular production and climate-resilient infrastructure are becoming increasingly important to long-term growth.
