The Indian government has removed mandatory greenhouse gas emission targets for FY2025–26 for refinery and textile units under the country's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). The decision, announced through a September amendment by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), comes amid global economic disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.
The amendment affects 21 refinery units, including facilities operated by Indian Oil, Reliance Industries' Jamnagar refinery and Nayara Energy's Vadinar plant. Textile units covered under the scheme will also benefit from the removal of FY26 emission targets.
However, the relaxation applies only to FY2025–26, while FY2026–27 emission targets remain in place. The move provides temporary relief to affected industries as they navigate economic uncertainties, energy cost pressures and operational challenges while continuing their transition towards lower-carbon production.
