India-UK Trade Pact: Annual Data Exchange to Boost Business

India and the United Kingdom have agreed to exchange annual data on the use of their Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The initiative will track tariff benefits claimed by businesses and gather feedback on the agreement's implementation.

The decision was announced following the 16th meeting of the India–UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). The annual exchange will begin one year after the trade pact comes into force. It aims to help more businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), access the agreement's benefits.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds co-chaired the meeting. Both countries also agreed to establish committees, working groups and government contact points to support smooth implementation.

Trade Agreement Creates New Export Opportunities

The India–UK trade agreement covers several sectors, including automotive, manufacturing, consumer goods, creative industries and medical technology. It is designed to improve market access and strengthen bilateral trade.

Early trade activity highlights the potential benefits. Scottish salmon entered India at zero tariffs within two weeks of implementation, while Scotch whisky gained access at reduced tariff rates. The first cars exported under the tariff-rate quota also cleared customs.

Indian exporters responded quickly when the agreement took effect. More than 50 consignments were sent to the UK on the first day. Shipments included smartphones, machinery, turbojets, gold jewellery, garments, woollen yarn, tea and coffee.

Focus on Better Use of Trade Benefits

The annual data exchange will help both governments identify business priorities and areas where additional support is needed. It will also provide insights into how companies use tariff concessions and navigate implementation challenges.

For Indian exporters, the agreement could create opportunities to expand sales in the UK market. Better awareness of tariff benefits and simpler implementation processes may help smaller businesses participate more actively in international trade.

The initiative marks another step towards stronger India–UK economic cooperation. Regular monitoring and industry feedback will be important to ensure businesses can translate the trade agreement into practical export and growth opportunities.
