Odisha Targets $500 Billion Economy by 2036 Through Industry

Odisha is expanding its industrial base beyond mining and metals as it targets a $500 billion economy by 2036. The state is focusing on emerging technologies, green energy, advanced manufacturing and employment generation to support long-term economic growth.

According to Hemant Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary for Industries, the government aims to turn investment commitments into operational projects. It also plans to increase local value addition and create more jobs.

During 2025–26, Odisha approved 234 projects worth ₹4,63,596 crore. These projects have the potential to generate around 2.46 lakh jobs. Of these, 106 projects had reached the groundbreaking or inauguration stage, involving investments of ₹2,17,709 crore.

The state is also attracting investments in information technology, data centres and related services. Four recently approved projects in these sectors involve investments of approximately ₹1.43 lakh crore. Reliable power, land, water, digital connectivity and skilled workers will be essential for their implementation.

Meanwhile, Odisha plans to strengthen downstream manufacturing, critical minerals processing and advanced materials. These sectors could help the state capture more value from its natural resources.

The government is also promoting labour-intensive industries, including textiles, food processing, tourism and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This approach aims to balance technology-led investment with wider employment opportunities.

In addition, the state wants to spread industrial growth across more districts. Recent approvals covered 27 projects across 15 districts, creating opportunities in renewable energy, agro-processing, forest-based products and local supply chains.

Odisha aims to become a major manufacturing and export hub by 2036. The government says better project approvals, coordinated clearances and responsible industrial development will be essential to achieving this goal.
