U.S. furniture and home furnishings sales recorded strong growth in September 2026, rising 4.9% year-over-year to an estimated $10.696 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC).
Sales also increased 1.3% compared with August, when the category recorded an adjusted $10.559 billion. The September performance marks a positive development for the U.S. furniture and home furnishings market.
However, year-to-date sales remain below last year’s level. Furniture and home furnishings sales totalled $93.192 billion, down 1.5% compared with the same period in 2025.
Across the wider retail sector, total U.S. retail sales reached an estimated $745.021 billion in September. This represents a 6.3% increase from September 2025 and a 0.8% rise from August.
Several retail categories also reported strong annual growth. Gas station sales increased 28.1%, while miscellaneous store retailers recorded a 10.9% rise. Electronics and appliance stores grew 9.4%, and non-store retailers increased sales by 8.2%.
Meanwhile, building material and garden equipment retailers reported a 4.5% year-over-year increase, although sales declined 0.6% from August.
The latest figures indicate renewed momentum in U.S. furniture and home furnishings sales. However, the category’s year-to-date decline shows that the market has yet to fully recover its previous year’s pace.
